018 – Live Like Eternity Matters

Psalm 90:12
Psalm 90:12 says "So teach us the number of our days. That we may gain a heart of wisdom." May we learn the brevity of life and that each breath is a gift. Do not take for granted the moments you're given here on Earth. Do what you can to bring glory and honor to His kingdom. Until the end.

This week’s headlines broke my heart. As I tried to process the violence, Psalm 90:12 kept echoing in my mind: ‘So teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.’

Our days here on earth are numbered and therefore our time is precious and fleeting. I cannot fully express my feelings from this week for like many, I’m still processing.

What I do know is this – as Christians, we are called to steward our time and lives wisely in a manner that would further the Righteous Kingdom. The scripture I shared at the start of this post is from the Old Testament and the psalmist asks God to “Teach us to number our days,” meaning they wanted to be aware of the passing of time and to understand that their days were finite.  This was a call to live with a sense of urgency, making the most of each day.

Life is short; Eternity is Forever

I have previously written encouraging you to be comfortable and patient in a season of waiting. That truth still stands. But this week reminded me of another truth: while we wait on God’s timing, we also need to live boldly for Him. Not rushing decisions but refusing to squander the gift of today. This week, what I’m talking about is living boldly and seeking a life that is pleasing to God with a sense of purpose and urgency. Live like eternity matters.

In the aftermath of violence this week, as a mother trying to explain this to my 10-year-old, I found myself highlighting very important facts to my son. The most important one I’ll share here is that Life is fragile. Eternity is forever.  Tomorrow is not guaranteed, and this concept can be found in other books like Proverbs 27:1, James 4:13.

And while I can’t wrap my mind fully around the violence, I know this: Scripture urges us to live with eternity in view, not because fear drives us—but because Christ’s love compels us.

Scripture doesn’t soften the truth: life is fragile, tomorrow isn’t promised. The Bible reminds us of this again and again.

“It is appointed for men to die once, and after this comes judgement,” Hebrews 9:27.

Living with Urgency, Not Fear

We get one life to live. The world we live in is broken.  The news will tell you the world is full of evils and distractions (but it’s also filled with beauty and people who love people).

Jesus said in John 14:3, “Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.  And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also.  And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

We’re not called to live in fear of the brokenness. We’re charged with living obediently to Him and living a life of love, grace and forgiveness toward God’s children.

Talking with My Son about Eternity

How do you explain to a 10-year-old that our lives are so short? (My 36 years feel ancient to him, but in the scope of eternity, they’re only a breath).  I shared with him that in the blink of an eye, we could find ourselves shed of our human bodies and standing before the creator facing judgement.  We won’t be able to take money, cars, or things with us to Heaven, but we can take our families. And when we find ourselves before the Creator, all the moments we lived on earth will either be held against us or we will be seen as spotless; redeemed by the blood of the lamb.

It was a very challenging conversation that I was anticipating someday, just not that day. I’m thankful he asked and that we were able to have a conversation about his salvation, his life and eternity.  If you’re a parent, maybe you’ve faced these hard questions too. And if you haven’t yet, I promise—they’ll come. My encouragement is to let these conversations lead us back to what truly matters.

Living a Christian life will not always be easy

Jesus also tells the disciples, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

My prayer for you is that you begin to live every day with purpose. Life is so very precious – and short. God desires our hearts, above all else. No matter where you are in your walk of faith, I urge you to deepen your relationship with Him. If you’ve stumbled on this post and aren’t a follower, I pray that you lean into His love and develop a relationship with him.

A Call to Heart

Friend, we don’t know how many days we’re given. But we do know this: each day is a gift. Let’s spend it pointing our families, our communities, and ourselves toward the hope we have in Christ. Eternity is too important to ignore. If you don’t know Him as your Lord and Savior, today can be that day. I’m always available if you have questions.

Dear Heavenly Father,

We come before you with open hearts and ask that you would help us recognize the truth of Psalm 90:12. Teach us Father, to number our days, that we may grow in wisdom. Help us to better understand the brevity and fragility of our lives.

Please be with the families of those affect by great acts of violence this week. Comfort the parents, spouses, and children left to pick up the pieces of a broken world as their loved ones were called home. Bless them, Lord.

Give us the strength to show grace, love and kindness to those who interact with us and our families and live with a sense of urgency and purpose.

Grant us wisdom and discernment to stand against evil injustices. Help us to make a positive impact in the lives of others.

Lord, we also pray to see with your heart and understanding. Help us to remember that our choices and actions have eternal consequences. May our numbered days point others to you. Give us a deep desire to invest in things of eternal value and to fulfill the purposes you have for us.

Thank you, Lord for the gift of another day. May we live with gratitude and a sense of urgency, seeking to honor and glorify you in all that we do. In Jesus’ holy name, Amen.

Be Blessed, my friends.

    1. Thank you, Katherine. Perhaps my favorite post so far – because it’s so meaningful. This week we saw a lot of people lose “followers” on social media platforms because of their stance on certain politics or religion. I’m here to say, I’m not worried about people following me. I’m worried if they’re following HIM. Much love, friend.
