022 – When the Ordinary Weeks Still Matter

This week wasn’t particularly exciting—and maybe that’s exactly what I needed. No major milestones, no chaos (unless you count a chicken choking on a tortilla, which I’ll get to), just the gentle rhythm of everyday life.

The chickens are happy in their coop, I wrapped up coaching my third-grade volleyball team, and I spent another week at the farm—picking what felt like a million pounds of squash. It’s been full, but in the steady, satisfying way that doesn’t leave you drained.

At one point, I watched one of our hens choke on a piece of tortilla and realized I had absolutely no idea how to give a chicken the Heimlich maneuver. I stood there for a moment in awe, wondering if “chicken CPR” was even a thing (thankfully, she figured it out before I had to try). As silly as it sounds, it makes me laugh now—because it reminded me how much of life is like that. We face these tiny, unexpected moments—sometimes scary, sometimes funny—and somehow, things just work out. Call it divine intervention, a blessing, or maybe just God’s quiet hand in the ordinary.

When Your Dream is Someone’s Ordinary

Earlier in the week, I visited a new friend’s farm and was reminded how much beauty there is in making the most of what you have. She grows her family’s food, repurposes nearly everything (like making stock from the bones of her roasted chickens), and feeds her animals from what her land produces. It’s humble, quiet, faithful work. The kind no one claps for—but the kind that sustains.

As she walked me around her property, I could tell it was hard work, but she and her husband are doing what Luke and I have been dreaming about—on top of their full-time jobs! And as I stood there in her garden, I thought maybe that’s what this season is about for us right now. Not the big moments, but the steady ones that are preparing us. We’re in a season of ordinary, daily obedience that doesn’t make headlines but builds a life worthy of thanks.

Finding Peace in the Ordinary

I’m learning that growth doesn’t always look like motion. Sometimes, it’s resting in His peace. Like a seed that’s been planted—there’s work happening beneath the surface long before anything breaks through the soil.

This season feels like it’s about showing up, tending what’s in front of us, and trusting that God is doing the deeper work—even in the calm, even when nothing “big” is happening.

Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord…”
— Colossians 3:23.

Maybe your week felt ordinary too. That’s okay—there’s holy work in the ordinary.

I encourage you to thank God for the slow and quiet seasons, because sometimes, they’re where He shapes us most.

Until next time, friends—be blessed.
